Team GB Visits Kent Science Park
Under tight security and with restricted media access, Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Cabinet colleagues visited Kent Science Park to give 100 business people and advisers the opportunity to take part in their very own, ‘Prime Minister’s Question Time’.

During the visit Maxim, which works with Kent Science Park in a PR and public affairs capacity, liaised with No.10’s press office, and in particular with BBC South East Today and Paul Siegert of the BBC Politics Show.

As soon as the Prime Minister and colleagues had left the Park it was straight to work for Maxim, preparing a release, getting it approved and despatching it to the county’s media, along with photos of the visit.

“With very little notice we got to work, and our experience with other ministerial visits, notably Tony Blair and David Miliband, held us in good stead. Our knowledge of the Park, the tenants and many in the business community meant we were well placed to assist No.10’s press office and attending media,” said Andrew Metcalf, director of Maxim. He added: “What was required was a rapid response and quick turnaround in order to secure the maximum coverage for Kent Science Park.”

So what does it mean for the client? From Kent Science Park’s perspective the visit was a great vote of confidence, especially as Gordon Brown described it as “a huge success with over 75 firms, and a great tribute to the ingenuity and creativity of the people in this area. It’s making a difference”.

Andrew Metcalf continued: “In terms of profile the visit was priceless, highlighting the regional importance of the Park. It also provided a great opportunity to introduce the Park to many important businesses and influential organisations.”

Before the Prime Minister’s arrival, the Park’s managers met senior representatives from SEEDA and had the opportunity to outline plans to invest a further £25m over the next five years, which would create another 500 jobs by expanding the 22 hectare Science Park by four hectares.
