First work for CBI South East

5 April 2001

Sometimes we forget that we’ve been here before when it comes to tough economic times – and history does repeat itself.

On this day back in 2001, Maxim completed its first piece of work for the Confederation of British Industry - South East (CBI). It was the start of a nine-year relationship with the business representative organisation.

Back in April of that year, senior South East industrialists got a glimpse into the economic outlook thanks to a visit to Leeds Castle by Kate Barker, the Chief Economist of the CBI and one of the country’s most respected economists.

She suggested that the UK economy could not avoid the economic fall-out from the recent decline in the value of the worldwide stock markets and that the UK downturn looked set to be prolonged. For the UK that was apparently a further period of uneven growth, with exporters and the tourism industry continuing to struggle – again demonstrating that the economy is cyclical.
