Last minute rush secures bumper awards entries

April, 2016

Proving journalists love an impending deadline, 58 per cent of the 147 entries for the Kent Press & Broadcast Awards were submitted either the day before or on the closing date for submissions.

Now in its second year, the awards recognise the achievements of the county’s media and are organised by Maxim, a leading South East PR, marketing and public affairs agency.

Maxim’s Rachel Knight commented: “We’re really pleased to have had another great response to the scheme which attracted even more entries than last year, some just minutes before the 5pm deadline. We know how journalists work though so it wasn’t a great surprise and we really appreciate the effort that goes into the submissions.

“The most popular categories included Kent Young Journalist of the Year, Kent Print Journalist of the Year and Kent Feature Journalist of the Year but all 14 categories attracted a good level of interest.”

Judged by experts

More than 100 individuals entered the awards which will now be examined by a panel of experts. Judges Susie Boniface, a national journalist known as Fleet Street Fox; PA photographer Gareth Fuller; sports journalist and lecturer Paul Majendie; digital consultant Patrick Fuller; journalist and lecturer Dr Sarah Lonsdale; and award-winning TV producer Martyn Gregory will meet in May to agree the shortlist.

Rachel continued: “We hope to announce the finalists at the end of May, all of whom will be invited to attend the awards ceremony free of charge. The only way we can run the scheme is thanks to the 14 organisations supporting the awards so we’re extremely grateful for their participation.”

Taking place on Friday 15 July at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, Canterbury, the ceremony will be hosted by journalist and broadcaster Cathy Newman.
