Maxim ensures story is on the right track for publicity

April, 2021

A fundamental basic of public relations is getting the story to the media in the most efficient and effective manner. Andrew Metcalf, Director of Kent PR and marketing agency Maxim, explains more and shares a recent success story, which demonstrates why PR is more than “just” a press release.

PR comes into its own when called upon to proactively ensure the message about a story gets out there quickly, especially when it is critical to a business’ reputation and future.

You may have seen recent news that Buckmore Park karting circuit is at risk of closure after a possible lifeline to help it ride out the pandemic was denied by council planners.

Maxim was called in to advise on what could be done to ensure the public understood the site’s predicament. After a briefing by the site’s owners and planning advisers we considered the options available and quickly developed a campaign around a press release and social media to explain how the situation had arisen.

The story

Having submitted a planning application to the local authority to change the use of part of the site and generate income, the hopes of the site’s owners were dashed when the planning officers rejected the proposal before it was even seen by the Planning Committee.

Our press release contained the key elements of the story and the implications of the decision, plus quotes attributed to the owners. Next we got to work, picking up the phone to key journalists and outlining the story and its significance to local residents and implications for the business’ future.

Coverage was quickly secured on KentOnline, as well as Kent Live, with interviews arranged with BBC Radio Kent, KMTV, plus mentions in the news bulletins on BBC South East Today and Heart Radio.

The client also personally used the press release and distributed it through their own social media channels, which includes its 25,000+ followers on Facebook.

At the end of a busy day, we received the following email: “Thanks for your hard work and turning this around so quickly. I've been pleased with the coverage we've received and hopefully it will make the difference.”
